Rural Medicine Program (RMP) - University of Alabama School of Medicine Huntsville/Auburn University
The mission of the Rural Medical Scholars Program (RMSP) is to produce physicians for rural Alabama who are leaders in developing healthy communities. Established in 1996, the program is open to college seniors and graduate students who plan to go to medical school and practice medicine in a rural area. The Rural Medical Scholars Program is a highly-selective pre-med and medical education program of The University of Alabama, the University of Alabama School of Medicine and the College, which also functions as the Tuscaloosa Regional Campus for UASOM. As part of their RMSP pre-med experience, the scholars take graduate level courses, participate in farm field trips, shadow rural physicians, conduct or assist with health fairs and screenings or other community service projects and attend lectures and workshops pertaining to rural community health topics. To request an application, contact the Rural Scholars offices at UA, 388 Nott Hall, (205) 348-5892.
Interviews for RMSP applicants will be held in June at the College of Community Health Sciences in Tuscaloosa. For more information on the RMSP at The University of Alabama, contact Susan Guin, CRNP, associate director at sguin@cchs.ua.edu.
Rural Medicine Program (RMP) - University of Alabama School of Medicine Huntsville/Auburn University
The Rural Medicine Program is a five- year medical school curriculum with the sole purpose of training physicians to serve in the areas of greatest necessity – rural and small town Alabama. The RMP began in 2006 after concerned physicians on the Alabama Family Practice Rural Health Board developed the Project to Recruit Rural Medical Students in response to the severe lack of physicians in rural Alabama. RMP is a jointly sponsored program by the Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics and UAB School of Medicine Huntsville Regional Campus. The term “rural” in the context of the RMP is defined as any non urban area of Alabama. Basically this includes any area outside the metropolitan areas of Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Mobile. Some parts of the state are both rural and urban so occasionally questions arise about whether an area qualifies as rural. If you are unsure if the location where you grew up meets the criteria for the RMP, please contact Ms. Paula Clawson if you have additional questions at 256-551-4609 or via email at pclawson@uab.edu.
