Health Profession Students

Students who are interested in primary care practice have an opportunity to complete clinical training opportunities, also referred to as rotations, in rural and/or underserved communities. Local health care providers serve as preceptors and benefit from the teaching experience while communities receive thousands of hours of healthcare from students who bring up-to-the-minute healthcare innovation and education to the clinical experience. It has been demonstrated that students who have enjoyed a rotation in rural and/or underserved community are more likely to practice in a similar setting upon completion of their degree.

Practicing in communities with limited health care resources can help students develop and/or improve diagnostic and critical thinking skills. Students are introduced to public health issues and learn more about the emerging collaboration between medicine and public health.

Through the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program, health profession students are eligible to join the Community Based Student Education (CBSE) Program, which gives students:

  • An opportunity to schedule clinical rotations in West Alabama
  • Access to mileage reimbursements or housing assistance
  • Network with other students and health care professionals

If you or someone you know may be interested in joining our CBSE Program, For more information on the CBET Program, please contact the Alabama Statewide AHEC Program Office: Becky Reamey, reamey@uab.edu; Rachel Watts, rwatts@uab.edu; Kala Dixon, kaladixon2uabmc.edu

Do you have any question?

Are you a nurse working in a rural area?
Work to take your career to the next level.

GNEPCS focuses on educating more advanced practice nurses to work in underserved areas, and on building networks connecting Alabama’s existing rural health care providers with one another and UAB—to reach more Alabamians needing primary care. It creates a pipeline of nurses from rural Alabama counties for recruitment into primary care nurse practitioner programs as Primary Care Scholars.
