HEALTH PROFESSIONS ACADEMY PROGRAM

Health exploration programs for students in grades 9 – 12

West Central Alabama AHEC is committed to expanding the health care workforce, maximizing diversity and facilitating distribution, especially in underserved communities. We offer a creative, hands-on and innovative health career program, HPA or Health Professions Academy for students in grades 9-12. We introduce students to a wide assortment of health career possibilities, guide them in goal setting and educational planning, and offer science courses that strengthen critical thinking skills. Working with schools, colleges and community partners, West Central Alabama AHEC works closely with schools across west Alabama and pre-professional college programs.

Health Careers Exploration Programs

Rural Health and Rural Dental Health Scholars

These programs are exclusively for current high school juniors from rural Alabama communities and provide students with opportunities to gain experience about careers in medicine and dentistry while experiencing college firsthand. Students enroll in Introduction to Chemistry and Introduction to Creative Writing.

MOORE Scholars (Medical Opportunities and Outreach in Rural Education)

The program was initiated to increase the number of students from rural Alabama who qualify for admission to medical school through the Rural Medical Scholars Program. This program is for rural Alabama high school students currently in 12th grade who plan to enter college in the next academic year.
